Slide 1: The History of Photography Allison Urban 15 November 2006
Slide 2: 1568  Daniello Barbaro fitted the camera obscura with a lens and a changeable opening to sharpen the image.
Slide 3: 1840  Sir John F. Herschel coins the terms photography, positive, and negative.
Slide 4: 1900  The Browning, or Brownie, is the first mass marketed camera.
Slide 5: 1903  The American Graflex SLR camera became the standard hand camera of pictorial photographers for the first two decades of the century.
Slide 6: 1925  The flashbulb is patented by Paul Vierkotter to replace flash powder, which was noisy and smoky.
Slide 7: 1936  The most telling photographs of World War II were made by magazine photographers or under their influence. Life ran a school for army photographers and sent its own photographers to the front.
Slide 8: 1936  Kodachrome was the first multi-layered color film developed by Kodak.
Slide 9: 1937  The first major disaster was captured by photography as it happened  The Hindenberg Zeppelin was photographed as it burst into flames, photos that are still very moving and memorable today.
Slide 10: 1959  Color photographs begin to regularly appear on the cover of National Geographic.
Slide 11: 1966  Larry Burrows was the first important photographer to photograph an entire war in colour.  The Vietnam war
Slide 12: 1972  Nick UT shoots his Pulitzer Prize winning photo of Kim Phuc running through napalm dropped by the U.S. Army.
Slide 13: 1984  Canon makes the first digital still camera.
Slide 14: 1998  The first consumer mega-pixel cameras are introduced.
Slide 15: 2001  9/11 was captured on film, digital, and videotape as the planes crash into the World Trade Centre
Slide 16: 2002  Digital SLRs almost completely replace 35 mm cameras in Western daily news coverage.
Slide 17: 2004  The massive Tsunami on December 26th is the most devastating natural disaster to ever be captured photographically.
Slide 18: 2005  Canon releases its 17.2MP Mark II Camera which effectively gives approximately the same resolution as 35 mm film.
